Hear from Gwinnett County Schools Superintendent J. Alvin Wilbanks, who has served as CEO/Superintendent of Gwinnett County Public Schools since March 1996. During his tenure, GCPS grew to be the state's largest school district and a nationally acclaimed K-12 learning organization.

J. Alvin Wilbanks, CEO/Superintendent of Gwinnett County Public Schools since March 1996, has experienced a vast array of challenges leading a school district that is the 12^th largest in the nation and Georgia’s largest by far. A former Georgia Superintendent of the Year and one of four finalists for the national title, Mr. Wilbanks will share his perspectives on the opening of the 2020-2021 school year, a year like none other in his almost 25 years as superintendent. He will discuss the leadership imperative to balance different views about teaching and learning in the midst of a pandemic, and share his belief in the importance of schools and teachers in the lives of children during this time of national crisis.

Under Mr. Wilbanks’ leadership, the Gwinnett school district has earned a reputation as one of the most successful in the country. The Broad Foundation selected GCPS as a finalist for the prestigious “Broad Prize for Urban Education” in 2009, 2010, and 2014, and awarded Gwinnett the Broad Prize in 2010 and 2014. Other accolades for the district include “College Board’s Advanced Placement National Large District of the Year,” a “Great District for Great Teachers” at the Outstanding level, several mentions on Forbes’ Magazine’s national list of “Best Employers” and “Best Employers for Women,” and Georgia’s first-ever “Governance Team of the Year” Award.

Considered a leader among America’s superintendents, Mr. Wilbanks was tapped by three Georgia governors and two US Secretaries of Education to help craft significant education-reform legislation at the state and federal levels. He is a charter member of organizations that advocate for public education statewide and nationally, the Georgia Education Coalition and the national Large Countywide and Suburban District Consortium. Mr. Wilbanks is the founding president of Gwinnett Technical College, which he opened in 1984 and led for 12 years. Throughout his career, he has won numerous honors for his professional accomplishments and civic contributions.
