During this exclusive Business Insider, young professionals will get a glimpse into one of Gwinnett Community Outreach's most impactful community engagement programs, Gwinnett 101 Citizen's Academy, in just two short hours! The Gwinnett 101 Citizens Academy is a 12-week program offered twice each year which aims to develop and nurture informed and engaged residents, students, and business owners in Gwinnett County.

Attendees will have the opportunity to hear from two department leaders in Gwinnett County Government:

- Mark Farmer, Deparment Manager of Economic Development

- Lindsey Jorstad, Deputy Department Director of Community Services

Through this Business Insider, participants will:

Meet Our Speakers

Mark Farmer, Economic Development Manager, Gwinnett County Government

As part of a team charged with enhancing economic development in Gwinnett, Mark Farmer focuses on redevelopment, entrepreneurship, and research reports. He joined the County in January 2017, after serving for six years as director of entrepreneurship and information services and three years as research manager for Partnership Gwinnett, a public-private economic development initiative. His 20-plus years of business experience include owning Words & Pictures, a writing and photography business with such clients as Emory University’s Public Health magazine, Georgia Tech, and the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games. Mark has also held positions with Life University’s public relations and photography departments, MARTA, Hayes Microcomputer Products, the Powell Goldstein law firm, and Multimedia, Inc. He holds a B.A. in journalism from the University of South Carolina and an M.A. in economic development policy from Georgia Tech.

Lindsey Jorstad, Deputy Department Director, Community Services

Lindsey Jorstad serves as the Community Services Deputy Director. In her role she works to engage, collaborate, and support our diverse residents, workforce, volunteers, and partners. As a founding member of Gwinnett’s community-wide health initiative, Live Healthy Gwinnett, she takes a proactive wellness approach to address preventable chronic illnesses that impact residents. In 2019, Lindsey was recognized as the RWJF-NRPA Health Equity Awardee. As an advocate for positive youth development and diverse out-of-school time programs, she is identified by the National AfterSchool Association as a Next Generation of Afterschool Honoree who eliminates service barriers to expand resources for food access, healthcare, early learning, mental wellness, and sustainable partnerships. A true parks and rec kid, she has grown up utilizing community assets and strives to ensure all children and adults have the same opportunities to explore nature, discover social skills, adopt healthy habits, and give back to their community.

What is Gwinnett Community Outreach

Chairman Charlotte J. Nash and the Board of Commissioners championed the county’s first outreach program which now includes communications with diverse constituencies, cultural events, and citizens’ programs. The community outreach program is designed to engage and empower residents to be more informed and involved in Gwinnett County Government. This is achieved through:

Educational programming and workshops
Community events and forums
Stakeholder meetings
Collaborative partnerships

About Gwinnett Young Professionals

Established in 2015, Gwinnett Young Professionals (GYP) was created by the Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce as an initiative to champion young professionals. We envision GYP to be the leading advocate and innovative resource for young professionals to connect, grow, and make an impact.
