Description of Presentation:

This HRMA luncheon will feature HR professionals and business leaders sharing how organizations can build a business case for using their hiring practices to make a difference in their community by giving at-risk individuals opportunity for employment. The panelists for this event will share how businesses can develop new hiring strategies that reduce talent acquisition costs, expand their pool of potential talent, and enhance retention. Furthermore, HR professionals who are tasked with hiring will learn why their organization should care about the chronically un-employed and at-risk individuals. Knowing the questions associated with hiring at-risk individuals, Dion Kohler of employment law firm, Jackson Lewis PC, will focus on key considerations that need to be addressed before hiring at-risk employees and how to implement safeguards for employers. Come and hear what HR and business leaders from FedEx and Goodwill of North Georgia are doing to open their hiring process to at-risk employees and how they are making a positive impact in the community while also finding a great solution to many of their hiring needs.

Expose HR and business leaders to the reality of poverty in our community and the role businesses can play in alleviating it through purposeful hiring practices.

Speaker(s):
Dion Y. Kohler
Dion Kohler is a Principal in the Atlanta, Georgia, office of Jackson Lewis P.C. For more than 25 years, he has assisted employers in solving a wide range of workplace problems.

The cases Kohler handles include a variety of state and federal court claims involving discrimination, harassment, retaliation, contracts and employment related torts. He is an experienced trial lawyer and regularly handles cases before federal and state agencies, judges and juries. He is also committed to realistic case evaluation and when desirable, early case resolution through effective negotiation of a favorable settlement. When litigation cannot be avoided, he approaches cases aggressively with attention to detail and the objective of avoiding trial by obtaining dismissal or summary judgment.

Kohler is also recognized for his experience and counsel in matters related to occupational safety and health, affirmative action, employment contracts, and wage and hour matters including prevailing wage laws. He also is regularly called upon to assist employers in complying with the Family and Medical Leave Act, drug testing matters, the American with Disabilities Act Amendments Act, and other federal and state employment laws.

To assist employers in avoiding expensive employment related lawsuits and claims, Kohler regularly presents training programs for managers and executives. He also assists employers in developing workplace policies and practices which maximize positive employee relations and act as effective risk management strategies for the workplace.

Myndi Hoffman

Myndi Hoffman serves as the Regional Director of Workforce Development for Goodwill of North Georgia. Hoffman is responsible for implementing employment training programs helping people with barriers to employment for multiple state, federal and foundation grants and contracts involving multiple community and business partnerships in a variety of industries. Hoffman serves on multiple workforce development committees in Georgia, including the Atlanta Regional Commission’s Youth services committee, United Way Youth Services collaborative committee, serves as Chairman of Board for the Georgia Committee on Employment of People with Disabilities and is a past president of the Georgia Rehabilitation Association.

Jessica L. Jamison

Jessica Jamison is a Talent Acquisition Coordinator for HR South – Georgia District at FedEx Ground, a top employer in the package shipping and transportation industry. Jessica joined FedEx Ground in 2012 in operations, promoted to an HR Associate in 2013 and transitioned to her current role as a Talent Acquisition Coordinator in 2015. Before joining FedEx Ground, Jessica worked for various organizations dated back to 2009 in the logistics and transportation industry, holding serval titles from Operations Manager to an Executive Assistant to include Human Resources. Jessica specializes in full cycle of sourcing, recruiting, onboarding and talent development. With Jessica’s passion for diversity and inclusion in communities which involves teamwork, she continues to be the beacon of FedEx Ground and partner with local organizations to present stable job opportunities, benefits and career advancement for all.

Rita Izaguirre
As Jackson Spalding’s Human Resources Director, Rita is in charge of talent acquisition, development and retention for the firm’s three offices. Her career has included marketing, consulting, and labor law for large companies and public sector companies. Prior to joining Jackson Spalding, Rita served as the Senior Vice President for Talent Acquisition, Diversity and HR Compliance at SunTrust Banks, Inc.
Born in Cuba, Rita’s family immigrated to Venezuela and later to Miami where she completed high school. She earned her B.S. in Business & Political Sciences from Barry University and her law degree from Nova Southeastern University’s Shepherd Broad Law Center. She furthered her credentials with Certificates of Organizational Development and Human Capital Strategy from Georgetown University and Human Capital Institute, respectively.

Moderator: Jack Bruce, SHRM-SCP, SPHR

Jack Bruce is a member of The Benefit Company’s operations team, where he leads strategic initiatives and projects for the employee benefits firm.

Bruce is a HRMA member, a past president of SHRM-Atlanta and a certified HR professional, holding the SPHR & SHRM-SCP certifications. He volunteers with the Georgia Center for Opportunity as a part of the Hiring Well Doing Good Steering Committee, connecting employers to opportunities to broaden their hiring net to include those who typically find it difficult to find employment—including veterans, those with disabilities, ex-offenders, recovering addicts, refugees, the homeless, and trafficking survivors. Jack also volunteers with Tekton Career Training in Clarkston, GA to assist refugees beginning careers in the construction industry.
